Rancho Cordova Community Grieves After Tragic Loss of Vallerga Family

Rancho Cordova, CA — The Sacramento region is mourning the heartbreaking loss of David Vallerga, his wife Lindsey G. Peralta Vallerga, and their two children, 11-year-old Sydney Peralta Vallerga and 13-year-old Colton Drake Peralta Vallerga, who were found dead inside their home on Copper Sunset Way Tuesday morning in what investigators believe was a murder-suicide.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office responded around 8:30 a.m. after receiving a call reporting gunshots in the neighborhood. Shortly afterward, a second caller identified as David, contacted authorities claiming responsibility for firing a weapon and alleging that booby traps had been set inside the home. Out of an abundance of caution, deputies, including the sheriff’s office’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, secured the area and conducted a careful search. No traps were ultimately found.

Inside the residence, deputies discovered four individuals — a man, a woman, and two children — all fatally shot. Investigators later identified the victims as members of the same family. Authorities have said they are not seeking any additional suspects, and while the investigation remains ongoing, there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Law enforcement activity in the area continued for several hours before winding down early Tuesday afternoon.

The tragedy has left neighbors and friends stunned. Many described the Vallerga family as always smiling, welcoming, and full of life. Neighbors said the children were often seen playing outside, and the family was known for their positive presence in the community.

Lindsey Vallerga was widely respected for her work as a leader in development and community outreach at GradePower Learning in Elk Grove, where colleagues described her as passionate, driven, and deeply committed to helping children and families succeed.

Tributes have poured in across social media and the community:

  • “This family was pure joy. The kids were so kind, and Lindsey always had a smile for everyone,” one neighbor wrote.
  • “Lindsey’s dedication to children and education changed lives. She had such a big heart,” a colleague shared.
  • “Sydney and Colton were bright lights — polite, loving kids who will never be forgotten,” another tribute read.

As the investigation continues, the Sacramento community is rallying around extended family, friends, and loved ones, remembering the Vallerga family for their warmth, generosity, and the happiness they brought to those around them.

Authorities have indicated that additional details may be released as the case progresses.
